Cleaning Toons in H2o

#1 Post past BobL » Mon Jun 20, 2011 seven:eleven am

I keep my boat in the h2o (no lift) from March-Oct. This time of yr, the scum/algae starts to build-upward and in the past, I just left it solitary and let information technology scrap off over the winter when I pulled information technology out. This build-upward manifestly affects performance (speed and fuel consumption) then since I have a new toon this year (purchased the new Southbay in March) I have decided to try to make clean them while in the h2o. I am going to have to bladder and clean as we dont take anywhere to beach it and I really dont want to elevate my trailer up to my camp and pull it out of the water.

So to brand a long story short, any of y'all have advice on what to apply? Plastic putty knife? Scrub castor? I dont remember I should get agressive with brillo/steel wool pad so any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

My toon lives in the water 365. I employ a plastic putty knife and so a brush. The brush helps get the areas along the seams and knocks the rest off that the pocketknife left. I utilize a few noodles for floatation.

I recommend a short handled potent castor, and then scotchbrite pads. Nosotros don't keep in slip but still go a scum line. This is what we use very successfully.

PS tie a cord to handle in case information technology slips from grip

If the build up is bad plenty to bear upon functioning, best style to foreclose 99 percentage of the build upwards is to use anti-fouling paint. Some people think anti-fouling is merely for saltwater boats, that'southward a myth. The upper Chesapeake has low salinity in the spring and gets saltier during the summer, then we have issues with freshwater algae, saltwater (red) algae and then belatedly summer, barnacles.

If it'due south not that bad, scrub every other week.

The best way to minimize toon scum is to take x minutes at the finish of every canoeing day, and scrub the bathtub ring with a Scotchbrite pad.

You tin can use steel wool and abrasives, but they'll scratch the gunkhole. Most serious cleaning products are muriatic acid based.

Now that you're behind the eight ball, I'd yet stick with the Scotchbrite pad, a scrub brush and elbow grease. And, don't effort to float around doing the job. Observe some place yous tin become your feet on the ground (underwater), and it'll 1/3 every bit much work.

Many thank you for the suggestions. I figure this is almost a vii beer task but work on the h2o is better than "fun" at the firm.

If you want to accept some of the drudgery out of the job you could consider a Motor Scrubber. Its a battery powered, 8" scrubber. The scrub head is completely submersible.

I apply one for other cleaning tasks.

Are in that location any marina's nearby? I accept i near me that recommends powerwashing your toons. I haven't tried it yet, only they say if you practice it every 3-4 months information technology volition continue them pretty make clean. You lot will still need to do some lite scrubbing in between trips.

I utilise a scrubber that works basically like a scotchbrite pad with a handle on it.

Like to this:

I keep a couple of these on the gunkhole all the time. They're cheap and work pretty well. Ditto what was said above virtually doing your scrubbing in shallow water vs floating around.

Thanks for the additional suggestions!

No marina nearby and then this is going to exist a floating job as I dont care to deal with my trailer. Some of you lot guys are mentioning "scum line" (which I also accept) but this is the growth underneath the tubes. In Louisiana, the algae in the water grows faster than the grass in your yard. So once again, we can comfortably gunkhole well into Oct and crank it up again in March then I can deal with the trade-off. If I had some of the yankee blood found on this forum running in my veins, I could easily boat year-circular.

Volition let you lot know how my project turns out.

Hither's an update on my log cleaning projection. Tried the ii types of scrub brushes suggested and after a few minutes, I and so tried this niggling gadget and it worked great:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 ... 3992211701

Finished the task in less than an 60 minutes. The pot scrubber took off the growth in no fourth dimension with very little elbow grease needed (much less work than scrubbing). Being anal, I did followup with a quick scrub.

When I had my Bentley (with 50hp), I never cleaned the toons (just let the growth chip off when I pulled her out of the water each winter). Y'all tin can sure see the departure with a 115hp pushing clean toons vs. a 50hp pushing make clean toons. I didnt GPS the speed departure but I would exist willing to bet that the growth effected operation past 25-xxx% (possibly more).

Good to hear about the improved functioning. Have you ever considered antifouling paint?
